Girls' Night with Coffee Cake

One rainy Saturday night in March, Sara and I got together with our friend, Cat, to enjoy some baked deliciousness and a movie, namely Sex & the City 2. The movie was terrible but luckily the baked deliciousness was quite... delicious.

The dough was quite sticky at first, but a little extra flour resolved that problem. It also had a little difficulty rising (should've fed the yeast first!) but it was nothing a warm oven couldn't fix.

We decided on the suggested filling of chopped nuts (we combined walnuts and pecans), chocolate, sugar, cinnamon and a little nutmeg. It was a great combination, although it left us craving a straight-up cinnamon-sugar concoction sans chocolat. Ah well -- maybe next time.

Shaping the log was fun.

A little tricky.

But still fun.

Sara and I each made one. Whose is whose?

They both baked beautifully -- gorgeous golden brown color.

And the filling was really tasty--simultaneously light, due to the meringue, and very rich.

Thanks for another wonderful challenge. We're looking forward to April!

The March 2011 Daring Baker’s Challenge was hosted by Ria of Ria’s Collection and Jamie of Life’s a Feast. Ria and Jamie challenged The Daring Bakers to bake a yeasted Meringue Coffee Cake.
